Theme/Story
An offbeat and sardonic story regarding the fragile nature of relationships between the sexes and the search for a woman's place in a male-dominated society: A man's scheme to spice up his marriage with a menage a trois goes awry, when his wife begins to re-examine her sexuality and loss of purpose in life—and becomes obsessed with a most unusual woman.
ACT I
MONICA ANDERSON is a well-mannered woman who has resigned herself to a life of drudgery, both at home with her husband and at work with her male bosses. She's a former writer/activist, who no longer has time for such pursuits.
STUART ANDERSON over the years has slowly adopted the persona of a male chauvinist. In fact, he spends more time with his beloved car than he does with Monica. He also enjoys his collection of adult magazines as well as perverse sex, although intercourse between him and Monica is rather infrequent.
Stuart tries to convince Monica that an erotic threesome with another woman would help revive their struggling marriage and dormant sex life. Monica steadfastly refuses, though wonders if such an argument could indeed be true. Nevertheless, the matter seems settled. That is, until Stuart answers a personal ad and Fiona unexpectedly arrives at the door.
ACT II
FIONA is a free spirit with an engaging presence that Monica finds intoxicating. She also happens to arrive on a day in which Monica is feeling particularly vulnerable due to a series of heart-breaking events involving both her professional and personal life. Slowly, she finds herself seduced by Fiona's charm and they share an erotic encounter.
Fiona's impact is staggering, as Monica begins to re-examine every aspect of her life. As a result of her obsession with Fiona and a startling revelation regarding her marriage, the mundane life of Monica and Stuart is torn completely asunder. Inevitably, Monica and Fiona consummate their ever burgeoning relationship, while Stuart remains confounded by his wife's newly found liberation.
With time running out and still hopeful of a reconciliation, Stuart desperately enlists the aid of DETECTIVE BRADY, an unscrupulous private investigator cum amateur philosopher (ironically hired earlier in the story by Monica to trace Stuart's activities). Brady is given the job of ascertaining Monica's whereabouts, but makes some rather startling discoveries regarding Fiona's past instead. He quickly develops his own ulterior motives, turning the tables on everyone involved.
ACT III
Brady's treachery forces Monica and Fiona to confront some rather unpleasant choices. A series of plot twists result in an emotion-filled climax, which sees: 1) A showdown with Brady, as Fiona faces the consequences of her past, 2) Stuart making a rather remarkable testament of his love for Monica, 3) The bittersweet, yet satisfying outcome of Monica's struggle to find her place in the world.
